Concept paper in Philippine Literature

What a Filipino is Like: Belief and Tradition in Selected Philippine Plays.

From the selected play that we've tackled, I have realized that these selected plays portrays some beliefs and traditions of Filipinos in the past and now a days. It also portrays how important the family and dignity to every Filipino. Belief is a feeling of being sure that someone or something exist or that something is true. Tradition is a way of thinking, behaving or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group, family and society for a long time. This is how Filipino makes unique than other races.

Just like in the play "World is an apple" by Alberto Florentino, they value the importance of family and have the attitude of being crab mentality. The importance of the family in the way that Mario did his very best just to find a job to provide the needs and wants of her family. But then there was a time that Gloria, his wife, asked for money which they need to feed their daughter. But Mario told her that he doesn't have money. Gloria didn't believe him , and asked him to tell the truth. Mario tell his wife the truth that the reason that he doesn't have money is that he was fired from his job. It is because of an apple his boss thought that he stole from the market. This apple is for her daughter because he thought that she would like it. This shows his love for her daughter. Between the conversation of Gloria and Mario, suddenly Pablo, his old crime buddy, came and offer him a job that includes crime for him to provide the needs of her family. Mario accept the offer of Pablo for the sake of his family, even if Gloria pleaded very hard for him not to go with the man.

"New Yorker in Tondo" by Marcelino Agana. This is a story of a girl Kikay who went New York to study hair culture and Beauty science. Upon going home after a year, she acquire all the New Yorkish things like style, language, looks and manner. she even influenced her mother with her way of living. This was also what happened to other Filipinos who came from abroad they already forgot what are their own culture and traditions. because they had already adapted the culture of other country

"Sabina" by Severino Montano. The main character of this play is Sabina herself. Sabina was in love with Mr. George who is already married. This was not accepted by her family, he even chose Mr. George over her family and relative. Also this thing of  being mistress of Sabina is not accepted by the society. She believed that they would be happy and nothing should be matter. She even gave up herself to Mr. George because of her love, naivety, and stupidity. But when she found out that she was pregnant and Mr. George was already married, she killed herself she committed suicide. Now a days, Filipino solve their problems by committing suicide not knowing that it was not the best solution to solve their problem

"Sepang Loca" by Amelia Bonifacio. This is the story of a woman who cannot bare child. So in order for her to bare a child, every fiest of their patron saint they would dance althrough out the ceremony and would offer a flower to the patron. This belief is also happening in reality just like the patron in Cebu City.

"Three Rats" by Wilfredo Ma. Guerero. This is the story about the married couple where the wife, Nita, is having a commitment with the best friend for her husband, Gonzalo, the name of his best friend is Adrian. When Gonzalo knew that his wife and his best friend has a commitment he took a step to kill his best friend, Adrian. It is in the rule of the society and also to the commandments of God that it is a sin to love the person who is already married and also you should not revenge other people by killing them.

Untold feeling

as i saw you from a far
you're like the star in the night sky
that shines so bright,
brighter that the rays of the sun.
you are the only one
who's recognized  by my eyes.

as we walked into opposite direction,
i cowardly stare at you
not knowing that you look at me too.
I am about to smile at you,
but you were already smiling
to someone who's behind me.

it's really hard to accept
that you were not recognize
by the special star
in your night sky.
if you only knew
would you feel the same too?
